Stuff to think about for Group Project

Here's some things we talked about to consider for our group project:

Comparisons

*accidental vs. intentional
*natural vs. man-made/artificial
*complexity vs. simplicity

Scale

*
oversized
*microscopic

Content/Process/ Form

* possibly architectural, boxes
* interactive
* alice and wonderland esque
* natural elements--confronting environmental issues, or coexisting with nature
*letting the piece change over time naturally (ie: the seasons)
*containing a larger metaphor that each person can interpret individually (the net)
*aim for a larger social message
*incorporate text
*viewer completes work with their mind
*integrate play (mini golf, sandbox, etc)
*repetition
*real world as a canvas
*confront the question: when is a work of art finished?
*confront line between artist and viewers
*incorporate stop motion, video, mixed media
*anonymity of artist

Location

*well chosen site
*possibly outdoors

  1. I think we should do something on a really large scale, incorporating text and mixed media. I'm not really interested in a social message about nature, but if that's what the class wants to do I'm fine with it. Since the class is really into playful, interactive works, I really like the idea of some Alice and Wonderlandish theme.

  2. I think we should do something playful, focusing on use of materials. I'm thinking too once we build some things with Matt Bua we'll probably get inspired. A whimsical project where we can be playful and everyone can put forth their skills would be promising. I like the idea of text too and social messages I'm just not sure about it at this point. Maybe once we start building the ideas of text can get incorporated. I really enjoyed Roey's presentation on Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler. Their projects are expansive and use different materials, demographics, and conceptual ideas. We don't have to get as serious as them if we want to keep it playful but somewhere in between might work. This way the campus will take us seriously too.
