Students won't trip on RWU's mushrooms

Sophomore Cory Alix left his dorm in Maple 10 on Friday, April 10th anticipating a normal walk to the Commons for breakfast. He didn't expect that three large mushrooms, all of which were painted bright orange with white spots, would greet him. Though he was surprised by the structures and the fact that they seemed to appear out of nowhere, he was delighted by the change in scenery.

"I love them," said Alix. "They make me feel like little Alice in Wonderland every time I walk by. I have been trying to work up the courage to go up and touch them one day!"

That's exactly the response students in the Visual Arts Special Topics course, 430.01, Installation, were hoping to elicit. Instructed by visiting professor Deborah Aschheim, the eight-student class created the three mushrooms as the second piece in their Alice in Wonderland series of projects. The intention of the mushrooms, as well as all of the artwork within the Alice in Wonderland theme, is to make students aware of the unrealistic and out of the ordinary elements of campus life.

"Our campus is looking through a looking glass," explained junior Psychology major and Installation student Lauren Dobronte. "We think it's the real world but it's not. We're sheltered here."

"We wanted to show that things pop up that don't normally occur," added Aschheim.

The three mushrooms displayed in the designated art area near the Gabelli School of Business are made of plywood frames and are stuffed with recyclable materials such as bottles and papers. In order to avoid deterioration and any potential danger risks, Facilities Management required the artists to coat the mushrooms in a weatherproof varnish and securely fasten them to the ground.

"We didn't want them taking someone out," said senior Architecture major Lauren Nickel.

Despite the precautions they had to take, they accomplished "a total video gaming mushroom look," according to Nickel. "They're bright and they really pop."

Their smaller counterparts do the same. Made of Fimo clay, the Special Topics students have created more than 100 miniature mushrooms, all of which they've dispersed throughout campus in places that "don't make sense," said Dobronte.

"I put one in the Financial Aid office, because they're supposed to help us, but they're really mean," said Dobronte.

The small mushrooms are in a variety of colors and can be found in places like A-Lot, the Marine and Natural Sciences building, the smoking gazebos, and the Architecture building.

The mushrooms aren't the only project of the Alice in Wonderland theme. A few weeks ago, Aschheim and her students premiered their art series on the quad, where they held a tea party and passed out invitations written on playing cards.

"We had a real bunny rabbit," said Nickel. "And cupcakes that said 'Eat Me' and tea cups that said 'Drink Me.'"

They also hosted a croquet game on the quad a few weeks ago. Dressed in red, white, and black to resemble a deck of cards, they played a large game of croquet and invited all passersby to partake. They still plan on creating one more project to conclude their theme.

"We need to think of something that's kind of a culmination," said Aschheim.

At the time of the interview, the Installation class was still deciding on their final creation.

The CAS phone idea didn't work out so well. No one really answered the phone. Only one person answered over a 3 day trial and when I asked him what his name was, he promptly replied; "I do not talk to strangers." Eh, I tried.

Dear Friends & Faculty,

Our office is recruiting student volunteers to help support the 2nd Annual 5th Grade Day, which will be held on Wednesday, May 13th. Over 270 Bristol/Warren students will enjoy a campus tour, explore a major, and interact with members of clubs, organizations and teams. Last year, approximately 100 Roger Williams volunteers gave an hour or more of their time to help make this event a success. An application is attached to this message.

An important segment of the schedule is devoted to RWU students spending time with 5th graders who have expressed an interest in a particular major.

We have just tallied up the Majors that the kids are interested in and 48 students chose the Arts!

Please help me get the word out to RWU students focusing on Visual or Performance Arts that we need their help from 10:45-11:45. We need (7) Arts Students to sit at a table in the Rec Ctr. with (9) Fifth Graders and talk about why they chose their major and what types of experiences they are having through this course of study.

There will be a school chaperone with each group and we will have Majors 'cheat sheets' for them to read from if they get stuck.

Research has shown that by Middle School, students have already formed strong opinions about going to college. The 5th Grade Day program, co-sponsored by RWU and the Bristol/Warren Regional School District, was created to promote college access among our elementary school neighbors.

nick solomon has agreed to project manage the completion of the structure, which may include:

-adding to the structure

-finishing out the last side where we ran out of time and wood

-getting wood from the construction people or other places

-getting other cool things to integrate into the piece, such as but not limited to: more windows and or a door, parts of old furniture, plumbing? tvs? landscaping plants? interior decor- wallpaper, furniture, knicknacks?

-painting - could be a fun opportunity for painters

-art for the interior walls? it could be a gallery?

-open to additional suggestions

well, we only have 2 more weeks of installation! here's some stuff we should be working on/thinking about:

1. there are still a lot of mushrooms in the materials lab! please take some and distribute/document

2. i need to give jordan the sound files to post from the listening tour, haven't forgotten and sorry it is taking so long

3. i think it would be great if people wanted to keep working on the tp from space we made with matt. i think we could get more wood from the construction guys and finish the outside of the chicken wire side...also, we could invite other classes to work on it, like maybe painters would like to paint on it , what do you think

i need someone to review beeper cards with me. it's pretty easy- they just show me cards and write down what i remember, but they have to be sort of organized and responsible and have decent handwriting.

also, the person for this job can't be a student in one of my classes or someone i know really well. it's a great job for a psych major because it is based on a psychology experiment from the 1980's.

Here's where I put my 5 mushrooms:

The first one is in the school of business.....room 206. It's not really about the space being dysfunctional, but I had the most nonsensical meeting out of my entire four years here in this room. I can't actually disclose the details because the meeting was "confidential" but I was the only student on the board (with a bunch of faculty and staff) to decide who would receive the Excellence in Teaching Award.

This one (and the next one) are things we've talked about in class. This one represents one of the first classes, when we talked to DJ about the gallery space. He mentioned that it wasn't planned out for showing art, but focused on exhibiting architecture models, which is kind of silly seeing as it's the School of Architecture, ART, and HISTORIC PRESERVATION.

This one is next to the B&N bookstore sign because we talked about name brands invading places that were once private or local. Our bookstore wasn't always Barnes & Noble, and I think it was interesting to talk about how oblivious we've become to commercialization.

I put one above the laser cutter because it's a weird secret cult where they don't want too many people knowing how to use it.

This one is in Health Services. More of a personal pet peeve, but they don't automatically enroll commuter students for health insurance. You only are if you live on campus.

Invasion of the Tiny Mushrooms!!

So these are my tiny mushrooms. I only did 4 because as I was doing them the 5th one broke in my bag...

I warn you all now...all the places I thought didnt make sense also have attatched to them personal grudges that make me believe that...lol!

Ok, so the first tiny shroom is on the corner of the banister in the MNS lobby and this place doesnt make sense because it was where they told me and Lauren D that we could not put our poster because regulations said they could not have loose un-glassed paper or things obstructing the lobby...and then 2 weeks later there was a display of paper posters on easels all over the middle of that lobby...talk about your convenient school policy...

Second tiny shroom is located on the second floor banister looking down into the space that I think doesnt make sense (I wanted to put it right on the desk but then I would have had to explain the project and I do not think they would have appreciated it)...but anyway this office was not only the office that rejected the Roger Williams/Samuel Adams drinking poster and allowed a different drinking poster throuhg a few week later, but it is also the fofice that I had to fight to get an adjustable bunk bed because the non adjustable one had me only 20 inches from the ceiling...The womans excuse for not giving me the adjustable bunk bed was "it will be the same height no matter what"....which its not because now insetad of sleeping in a coffin I can sit up in my bed and not bump my head...

I placed tiny shroom number 3 on the sign for the honors program outside of the honors lounge in Stonewall 4 because for a program that is supposed to represent an intelligent community they do a lot of stupid things and are really unorganized...I have stories but i wont put them here...

Last but not least is tiny shroom number 4 whihc i placed on the top edge of a studio desk wall. Often times a studio professor will aslo be teaching another current class. So naturally they have all of their projects line up on the same dates and, when in studio they will tell u that they "know u have a lot of work but please puit your heart and soul into studio work"...then in the other class they say they "know you have a lot fo work but please put your heart and soul into this other class"...So pretty much they give you lots of work, they know they gave u lots of work, and depending on what class they see you in they want your full attention on it...and the other project they assigned you...

Help Wanted

Hi!

Okay, so on April 24th (it's a Friday!!!) approx 17 elementary school students (4th graders) will be coming to campus for an art program. Deborah said she would offer extra credit to anyone in Installation who would be willing to help out. Don't ask me if that counts for Lauren & Rachel who are in Mixed Media. Anyway, here's the cliff notes version:

April 24th, 2009

10AM-12PM

Students arrive on campus, tour the different buildings, and do a collaborative art project with the Mixed Media class. They will be receiving a t-shirt and a snack. The idea is to expand their ideas about the nature of art, what art can be. These fourth graders ARE REALLY CREATIVE AND SMART, so I was surprised how much art they've already been exposed to. If you would like to help out, you could

give tours of campus
create a piece of art with the students
show the students some of your art work
etc etc.

Let me know if you'd like to help out!

BTW, you don't have to be there from 10-12. You can help for just an hour if you have time between classes!!!!

'SHROOMS:
We discussed making one large mushroom (4ft?) two smaller ones (2-3ft?) and LOTS of little ones. We need screw eyes and stakes to make them more secure/drive them into the ground. The little ones will be made out of Sculpey and Velcro, which Deborah is picking up. We decided that the best place for our three giant mushrooms is between the art and business buildings near the trees. We will leave them up for a week. Rachel will do the drawing to show to the Dean. We are going to waterproof them with varnish and have a strong wood base that is staked down. Mushrooms, for our purposes, stands for anything that doesn't make sense. Therefore, we will put our little ones in places that don't make sense (guerrilla project).

On MONDAY, Andrew and Jordan will work on the wood frames for our large mushrooms and Lauren, Lauren, and Rachel will talk to Dean White about funding and getting permission.

On TUESDAY, whoever can come will meet at 2PM to work on the large mushrooms. EVERYONE BRING PAINT!

We will make the little baby ones in class!

Matt Bua:
We will create a junk sculpture in class with Matt Bua when he comes to visit. We want to get permission to do it on campus, but we might do our vernacular architecture piece in Andrew's backyard. Everyone will need to bring stuff in !

World Civilizations:
We will all make 5 buildings a day for 10 days (50 buildings) that all go together. I'm unclear as to when we need to have these done by?? We need to figure out how to make them stay, or different locations to put them in other than the rock. We may need to do tests? Or possibly put them indoors, orphan spaces.......etc. The idea is that the viewer will feel really big next to the little islands of civilizations. "Island nation of Lauren"

Talk with Facilities

Hey guys! So I talked today to Matt Clement who is the supervisor of grounds and athletic fields. I told him about our wanting to do outdoor projects and used the mushroom project as the vehicle for discussion. He said is sounds like an interesting project but some things we need to keep in mind are:

-weather proofing
-Proper ties to the ground for safety issues (wooden stakes and guide wire kind of thing)
-Not being in the way of heavy pedestrian areas and no overhanging the paths
-Time frame for project (need to be careful of other events lik spring weekend, etc)
-Projects in the newer developed section around the main quads require help from facilities in
terms of avoiding sprinklers and electrical work
-The closer we get to the dorms the less public safety can watch the projects and the more likely
they are to be vandalized
-Projects should probably have a label that it is a student work to deter vandalization

Matt thinks it sounds like an interesting project and just says to be sure to get the proper permission. He suggests getting the backing of dean white to add weight to our project to help with the proposal and said maybe student services could give us a better idea who to ask for this kind of project. For general location ideas I suggested behind the art and student services building (whihc he said would probably be not an issue save for vandalism), the area between CAS and ENG which he also said should be fine, and outside the front of the commons which will depend on giving a good proposal as well as the visual impact since it is on the main campus entrance road.

He said we could contact him for any questions and could keep him up to date

Tea Party Invitations

Tea Party

Hi guys! For the tea party I was going to make "invitations/comment cards" out of a real deck of cards. On one side I was going to put the invitation to the mad hatter tea part and on the other side I was hoping to put the website for our blog so that people who attended could leave us feedback.

My question is should I make these cards and pass them out at random before thursday (and we can hope people will show up and dont have class) or, as part of the tea party performance, we can wait untill thursday when we are all dressed up to run around campus grabbing people that we can obviously see dont have class at that time and give them the invitation to keep and get the website to leave comments for us after the tea part ends??

Listening tour and Homeless man

Ok, so this is my listening tour and at the bottom is my homeless man documentation...

This is on the bath right next to Bayside 1 and hear you cna hear the buzzing noise of the rather large electrical box and since there are three, one for each bayside, walking along them makes for an interesting sensations of constantly growing louder and softer buzzing sounds

This is right inside of the commons where one cna hear the music or commercials running in the background coming from the tv

This is that akward seating area behind the library and when you sit here you can enjoy the gentle humming of the fans that circulate air and cool down the mechanical systems for the library

So this is the Hallway leading from the entrance of the administration building to the registrar and bursar. If you stop and pause you cna hear the buzzing noise of the bad lighting.

ok, so this is my little homelss man made out of painters tape and he has a little notecard shelter...I felt bad leaving him on the bench outside of the library because it was raining and also i felt a little bit like I was littering...

Giant Mushrooms

Hi Installation Class-

I am interested in working in making the giant mushrooms for our Alice in Wonderland extravaganza. I think it would be a lot of fun and we can incorporate new ideas into the project (homeless man sleeping underneath the mushrooms, etc.) once it's fabricated. I was thinking of drawing up a proposal so we could get some funding from Dean White, but if there are others in the class that are interested in the mushroom project then let's collaborate and divide up the proposal tasks. One person could draw the mushrooms and give an idea of the materials we need. Another could take the idea of materials and devise a tentative budget. Another person/persons could fill out the official proposal forms we've been working with and obtaining signatures.

I can take the liberty of drawing up some sketches and making a list of possible materials. Not to say that other people couldn't draw up some sketches as well so we have more to work with. This is what I can contribute.

As for the tea party on Thursday, I am talking to a friend/ former coworker in the costume shop that may be able to lend us some top hats. No promises yet.

Campus Listening Tour

So here is my Tour.....It goes from J-Lot to Campus.......

These are the stairs I walk down everyday in the parking garage. ^ When I am in the garage, I can always hear cars zooming above me. It makes a weird thumping yet racing sound and I always feel like the garage is going to collapse!

This is the garage where the cars drive too fast!

Sometime I take the inner campus shuttle to the art building or the commons when I am too lazy to walk. When its bad weather or early in the morning, the shuttle is always full. When it takes a right up the hill near Bayside 100's. the end of the shuttle scrapes the ground. Its an awful noise and I can imagine the muffler and bumper getting ripped off in the process. This is a picture of the shuttle at the corner where it turns and the next is a picture of the stop sign where it scrapes.

Okay, so finally this is near the back entrance of the Architecture school and the back of the commons. There are always seagulls flying around going "CAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW". It's like a McDonalds parking lot of something...........

What Roey Did in Indianapolis While Everyone Else Was in Class

Since I wasn't in class on Thursday to present my project, here's a quick summary of what I did:

Oh, first, here's why I was there........
I went to Indianapolis for the National Alpha Chi Convention. This was RWU's first year attending the conference. My friend Heather and I both did student presentations, poster workshops, and attended other students' presentations. Notice me at my nerdiest above ^^

For the installation project, I was heavily influenced by the article we read, about the group that created secret hideouts and hide stuff in orphan spaces around the museum they were working in. I decided to use my own artwork--quotes from my color idioms series and a few other things, and stick them in seemingly random places around Indianapolis in both public and private spaces. If someone found one of my notes or artworks, my hope is that they would question the space around them more---start to question where they might find other random things, or really just notice more about the place the inhabit or frequent. Say the viewer found a note in a tree, would they start noticing all the trees they pass now on their way to work, or wherever they are headed? That was my initial goal of this project. Other things that interested me were getting people to respond, so I tried to put funny or thought provoking things on notes and I wrote my email address on EVERYTHING. If I get even one response, I'll be happy. (hopefully someone found one somewhere with my email address on it and decided to try contacting me) I also brought my letter writing materials for the St. Jude fundraiser with me, and ended up integrating that as well.

Here are some of the places I hid things: ( I felt uncomfortable taking pictures in restaurants and bathrooms, so most of the pictures here are of locations I chose outside)

These tire sculptures are part of a temporary exhibit around Indianapolis, so I stuck a note in every one I found. I found three of them, I'm not sure how many there were.

Around the hotel and restaurants I ate in, I left materials to support St. Jude Children's Hospital in magazine racks and newspaper stacks. I wrote instructions on how to address the letters and wrote my email at the bottom, which said, "email for a special thank you for supporting this great cause" I decided to integrate my letter writing materials, because I wanted to bring parts of Rhode Island to Indianapolis, and use things I was doing back home to introduce in this never before visited place. I thought it would be interesting because I also used my letters for St. Jude's for a project in Mixed Media.

This was one of two notes still left untouched by the time I left the hotel on Saturday. It is stuck beneath the sign in front of the elevators.
This one was much more visible than a lot of them and was probably ripped down by a cleaning person, but one can hope.

This is one of the lines I wrote on the notes. For a series of text works I'm doing, I have phrases that go with the color idioms Seeing Red, Feeling Blue, etc. I wrote "Actually bitch, I am an artist" and "We are all question marks, do you know the answer?" on a lot of the notes, because it has personal significance, and I thought it might get a reaction out of the note finder.

Originally, I wanted to see how far the viewer would go to find art, or follow the notes, like a treasure hunt, but I was thinking it might be cool to try to create some connection or link between Indie and Bristol by doing the same thing in Bristol (maybe with the photo treasure hunt) that has images of my trip or items from Indianapolis.

Sound Tour

Before I left for Indianapolis, I wrote a list of sounds I heard around campus on Tuesday. My camera was broken so forgive the crappy RWU website pics.

Also, shoes are really loud on the quad.......including flip flops, heels, and sqeaky sneakers!

I never realized how many noisy pipes we have around campus before "listening" for sounds around RWU. I have no idea what they are for, but there is a loud pipe by the side of Willow 51 and outside the Fine Arts building by the door to the sculpture room downstairs.

If you go in the Feinstein Center for Service Learning, you will hear lots of different noises. KC is always playing music or watching youtube videos (not to say she doesn't do her job ;) ) and there is a really loud sqeaky chair for the workstudy student.

I also heard some kind of motor from whatever construction they are doing to the Mount Hope Bridge down by A lot.

After the architecture conference I went to tonight I stopped by the ICA to see the Shepard Fairy Show. The ICA is free on Thursday nights FYI so I had a pretty lucky night. I took a few snapshots in the museum before being tackled by a hot security guard. Check out the cube it is made entirely of pins with absolutely no support or adhesive. It is basically a pile of pins in the shape of a cube. Pardon the blurry pics as I said security was ruthless especially on a free night at the museum.

DOUG FISHBONE

Installation artist Doug Fishbone's most ambitious projects have involved up to 40 000 bananas piled up in public places. Happily, once the pile is complete, the bananas are given away free of charge. This project which touches on the themes of consumerism, violence and globalization has landed in London, New York, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Poland.

This work totally reminds me of some of the issues Rachel is dealing with in Mixed Media...but I like how simple yet symbolic this conceptual work is and how it exists in pubic space.

Two of my favorite artists are Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler. They also work in public space AND with people who are not artists. I have a book I will bring to class. Above are images from their project House Monument. It's a multi-layered project, so it's easier if I just explain it in class.

DORIS SALCEDO

Responding to specific architectural, geographic and political situations, all of Salcedo’s projects are grounded in meticulous research, the exact nature of which is mostly hidden by the silent and hauntingly beautiful poetry of her work. Common themes include the destructive force of violence, personal and collective trauma, and the tragedy of human loss.

In 2002 over the course of two days Salcedo lowered 280 chairs down the façade of the Palace of Justice in Bogotá to pay homage to those killed here in a failed guerrilla coup seventeen years earlier. Blurring the lines between performance and sculpture this extraordinary spectacle publicly confronted memories of this traumatic event for the first time. The following year, at the Istanbul Biennial 2003, Salcedo filled a derelict building plot with 1,550 wooden chairs. These were piled house-high and made flush with the facades of the buildings either side, evoking the masses of faceless migrants who underpin our globalised economy.

Measuring the Universe

In his conceptual work, Roman Ondak uses spaces and materials as well as people and social rituals.

"the first exhibition with Roman Ondak in a German museum. Measuring the Universe, 2007, is a topocentric and therefore never ending trial to measure the immeasurable. The museum visitors are asked whether they want their size to be measured by the museum guards – in the same way as the size of children is measured by standing against a wall. At the level of each visitor’s height, the mark together with the first name and the date is written on the wall of the exhibition space."

Okay, so first off I have to mention that I love when present day artists refer to art from classical antiquity for inspiration. The installation below (2nd pic) is a three dimensional installation by Yinka Shonibare, The Swing (2001) which is modeled after French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard's The Swing (1766). Even without a side by side comparison I would have immediately thought of Fragonard although that may just be because of my art history classes......hmmmm...Anyways I dig it.

Now for some art more related to my life.....passed out with beer cans and a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos, this artist Will Ryman created this piece entitled 'The Bed' at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea on January 7, 2008 in London, England. I love the scale and the abstracted and cartoon like shape of the figure. I can only imagine walking up next to it and looking at the gigantic Doritos and cigarettes. Apparently the distorted scene is a self portrait of the artist lying motionless due to exhaustion.

Another artist I find very interesting is Judy Pfaff. She does installations using mixed media material and often her works are abstracted. The piece below literally comes right off the wall and looks as if it turn into some sort of patio party. I really like the high energy feeling that I get from her work.

The 3 installations artists I picked for their artistic use of natural elements to convey messages that look at human concepts interacting with natural ones.

This artist is Patrick Doughtery and he does installations in nature using natural elements (generally wood) that often makes commentaries on architecture's relationship to nature

This artist is Chris Drury and he also does installation art outdoors and made from natural materials.

My third artist is Olafur Eliasson also does environmental installations and his ideas often focuses on ideas of time/ transcience as well as reminders of environmental resources.

A few posts ago I added Blu Blu. I really like how he combines animation and Graffiti. I don't know many installation artists from the top of my head (most of them I have learned about in this class)so on break I did some research on different artists to find some that were relevant to what we were doing in class and some that I liked personally. So here are a few:

Here is a piece by several artists to raise awareness about sustainability. It is by the artists Jack Sanders, Robert Gay, and Butch Anthony. It uses solar power to represent the availability of renewable energy resources and recycled bottles to promote the ease of recycling.

The next installation artist I chose was Eduardo Srur. Srur is from Brazil and after a major cleanup of one of the most polluted rivers in Brazil Srur put these giant soda bottles along the river to raise awareness that the people in cars along the highway were polluting the river. Here is a video and some images.

And here is an installation that I personally think is clever and I like. Antoinette J. Citizen did this Super Mario Bros. themed installation with interactive boxes that made sound effects from the video game. I have fond memories of playing this game as I am sure many of you do.

ok, this is the homework for next week:
-read the fred wilson article and think about the display conventions people in the class reported on last week, ie, how the lighting at tiffany's contributes to the sense of value and uniqueness, how "magik" uses smells and sounds to create a sense of altered reality. chose an object that has personal meaning to you, may be a keepsake or something you made, and make 3 propsals for ways you could display it to change the viewer's interpretation of the object's meaning.

like wilson in his project "rooms with a view: the struggle between cultural content and the context of art," i want you to really consider how different conventions of display influence our sense of the meaning, value, function, origin, etc of the object. the 3 ideas are essentially proposals for a work that will be completed by the viewer: your installation is successful if the audience is so convinced by the context that they believe the new meaning of the object.

the proposals can be for installations you can't actually execute- ie, they can require resources or fabrication skills that are not actually available to us, feel free to brainstorm- but they should be ideas you'd really like to relize in public space. in class next week, we will discuss the propsals and generate some ideas for recontextualized objects that we will actually execute for feb. 26.

also, please read brian odoherty's article "nots on the gallery space" from inside the white cube, be prepared to discuss. continue to look for orphan spaces, and check out gordon matta clark's fake estates

for thursday, you should bring images of more orphan spaces you've found on campus, and digital and printed copies of your 3 proposals. also, bring paper and stuff to draw with. email me if you have questions, and think about whether you are free to go on a field trip to providence on sat feb 21

Outside the Art World

Two artists I think really show how you can work within the artworld, and outside of it, a happy medium I guess, is Kate Erickson and Mel Ziegler. The fact that some works of theirs are hard to find on the internet should attest to this. They do a lot of public art, like for one project, called House Monument, they put enough planks of wood to build a house in a gallery space, with all different quotes about homes on them. The viewer could move the the planks to expose different quotes. They used the wood to build a house for a family, and part of the deal was that none of the wood with the quotes could show when the house was finished. Talk about refusing to let art be a commodity! Anyway, I have a book that I will bring to class........because their art works are really original, and are often nonpermanent, and involve the general public. Basically, they rock.

Spencer Tunic/ Phish festivals

For those who don't remember, Spencer Tunic was mentioned during our first discussion. He photographs mass groups of willing volunteers laying down, sitting up or standing up completely nude (coed). The work, which he refers to as temporary installations, are done in semi public venue. By semi public I mean the area is legally used but removed from general public use, much like an event in a park. Some venues have been parks, beaches, and museums. The pieces are obviously the most temporary of temporary installations but the moment of the event is captured in the photo. The way the bodies compare and contrast in size, shape, color, and organic qualities is sculpturally genuine in an intense natural sense. Tunic also takes deep consideration into the site in which the nudes are displayed. For instance he organizes the bodies in positions that are SITE SPECIFIC. For example, if he were to do one in the tall trees of the redwood forest he would most likely have the people standing tall to reflect the trees. If he were doing the shoot in an urban park he would have the people laying flat in the streets. The actual act of organizing the bodies is done completely random. Basically the people wait behind a line, like at the start of a marathon, then once the line is dropped run into position and follow the orders " lay down. sit up. stand up. hold it. okay your done!!" The picture is taken to capture the moment. So in my eyes the actual art is in the moments before the image is captured rather than the final "framed finished photo". What a different way to look at the idea of a TEMPORARY installation!!!

My experience with his work was through a documentary featuring the jam band Phish (my absolute favorite band). The band commissioned him to compose a "nude photo" at the bands finale: a three day festival in Limestone Maine called the Great Went. This brings me to my next "topic". The band puts on festivals, normally at the end of a long tour, to celebrate and bring closure to the tour. The festivals are normally in remote locations ( the second to last one was in Limestone Maine, a small town of 300 people 1 mile form the Canadian border). Unlike other festivals, Phish is the headlining act and the only act for the nearly 80,000 fans in attendance. Apart from the music, the band puts on events during non show times for the fans. This is the relevant part for this class. The band finds art to be an intense way of interacting and communicating with the fans. Installations are an important part if not the most important part of this experience. This includes such exhibits as "The sunken city", a nostaglic city half buried in the ground and allows people to walk in, through and around the buildings. The "tower" was an interactive sculpture that complied pieces of wood painted and cut by the fans throughout the weekend that ended with the bands "piece of the work" being passed through the crowd, like a band member crowd surfing, to the site, attached to the fans pieces then lit on fire and left to burn for the remainder of the festival/ tour finale. One event that reminded me of the project that Deborah told us about fro her teaching in Cali that involve the student staging the death to cause a change in traffic, is the visual maze. This included a series of different experience taht manipulated and distorted poeple as they move through the space. Different experiences were a bubble room, where so many bubbles were produced that the person loses their orientation, a mirror room, a fog room, and one of those rooms where the lights spin around the people as they walk through the bridge and makes the walk uneasy. These and many other events are interactive installations that the band appreciates and encourages its fans to partake. The band also organizes a design/live program where artists are given housing and studio space in the bands former recording studio in Bearsville, Vt., to design and create art, most often sculpture, in conjunction with the band. This is not as relevant to the course as the Tunic info but I found inspirational and interesting how two different forms of fine art can compliment each other while entertaining and engaging the fans of both.
